Transportation

A sustainable movement

The Capital Regional District is changing, all thirteen municipalities are experiencing growth and there is building pressure to increase the efficiency of the regions transportation networks.

A major component to the regions evolving sustainability strategy is focusing growth to important corridors and supporting development with various transportation alternative to the automobile.

Transportation is a fundamental component to developing sustainable communities and is often overlooked because it requires long-term vision, planning and expensive infrastructure. To reduce carbon emissions and decrease our impact on the changing climate these are necessary investments.

Elizabeth May and the Green Party of Canada support employing currently available green technologies and encouraging transportation shareholders to be more efficient and innovative.

There is no one transportation solution and Vision Green outlines a variety of options from an expansion of cycling and walking networks, transit routes and services, light rail lines, long haul coaches, rail freight, and a greater investments in alternatives to the internal combustion engine for personal vehicles.

The Green Party position:
Elizabeth May and the Green Party of Canada is committed to finding solutions. We will make all bicycles and cycling gear tax deductible and provide federal contributions of up to 50% in support of provincial and municipal infrastructure projects to increase walking and cycling options.

The Green Party encourages similar federal contributions up to 75% for light rail and rail infrastructure investments to provincial and municipal governments such as the CRD with established planning policies to prevent urban sprawl.

Elizabeth May supports alternative transportation infrastructure instead of that focused on the internal combustion engine. Recently millions of dollars have been spent on unnecessary highway interchanges; instead such investments should have been made with the future in mind.

While building local connections to the rest of Canada and the World it is important that the national connectivity is also strengthened. It is critical to rebuild the country’s passenger rail system and develop a national clean rail freight initiative.

Elizabeth May is committed to working with people and industry to ensure the transition from fossil fuel powered transportation options to more diverse, sustainable and future focused transportation initiatives locally and nationally is done in an appropriate and sensitive manner.
