Elizabeth May Supports Womens’ Right to Choose

In response to email circulating trying to malign Green Party leader Elizabeth May’s views on abortion, she reaffirmed today that the Green Party supports the rights of women to access safe and legal abortions and that she personally strongly supports this policy.

“I am fully in favour of a woman’s right to choose,” said Ms. May. “It is important that Canadians are aware of the Green Party’s belief that protecting abortion rights in Canada is critical. I share this belief and the Green Party continues to work to enhance the availability of abortion services in Canada.

“My views are the same as former US President Bill Clinton, who has said ‘abortion should be safe, legal and rare’.”

The Green Party notes that many regions of Canada still lack abortion services. Much progress needs to be made to ensure greater access to abortions in Canada and to help women prevent unwanted pregnancies.  The Green Party has also advocated for access to safe abortion as part of Canada’s development commitments abroad, including the G8 maternal health initiative.
