The Power of the Youth Vote – Green leaders Elizabeth May and Georges Laraque (former NHL star) to Speak at UVic

Friday, November 26, 2010
11:30 am – 12:30pm

Cinecenta theatre, Student Union Building, University of Victoria

Elizabeth May, national leader of Canada’s Green Party, and Georges Laraque, former NHL hockey heavy-weight and deputy leader of the Green Party, will be coming to speak at UVic on Friday, November 26. Bring your lunch and listen in as Georges and Elizabeth talk about the power of the youth vote, enhancing youth voter turnout through a proportional representation electoral system and an end to negative attack ads on TV and radio, issues that affect youth, and Green Party policies.

Young Canadians are the most underrepresented population in Canadian politics, but as long as they stay home on election day our politicians don’t need to worry about the issues that matter to them. Had Canada’s youth voted Stephen Harper might not be Prime Minister today. Youth unemploymentis rampant, the costs of education are rising, and our current government continues to undermine international action on climate change.

The youth vote can play a revolutionary role in transforming Canada’s political landscape, helping to make history by electing the first national Green Party representative on the North American continent. Throughout the world in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Latin America, Greens in opposition and in coalition governments have been pivotal in raising issues for greater democracy, social justice, and sustainable jobs.

To find out how you can have your voice heard, come out and join the discussion with Elizabeth and Georges. Find out why Georges joined the Green Party!

When I turn 18, (I’m 16.) Me and my friends made a Pact on voting for the Green party to save our world. I know for a fact that my generation is going to turn this whole country around. We don’t want our planet to die. Not for us, Our Elders or our kids. nWe’re not so selfish like most of those stupid rich people who spend money on big houses and cars that polute the air we breathe. nnI support the Green Party. nn -Autumn Clair
